Purdue Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers ranked #1 Student Chapter
The Purdue Chapter of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers is the inaugural recipient of the new IISE Department and Student Chapter Performance Excellence Award, ranking 1st among 200 other chapters worldwide.
This past semester, the Purdue chapter of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE) was ranked the number one IISE chapter nationally. Not only did they receive this award, but Purdue IISE is also the inaugural winner, as this is the first year the honor has existed.

IISE is the world’s largest professional membership society dedicated solely to the support of the industrial and systems engineering profession and individuals involved in improving quality, productivity, and efficiency. Boasting over 300 general members and 7 committees, Purdue IISE is committed to advancing the success of our Industrial Engineers. This manifests in a myriad of activities, including offering courses in principles like Lean and Six Sigma, bolstering student body’s employment opportunities by hosting the Sigma Career Fair, and forming networks that go above and beyond during the 4 years on campus. In addition, IISE also hosts “How-To Career Fair” sessions leading up the Sigma and Industrial Roundtable that gives students a crash course in how to make the most of their career fair opportunities.
To receive first is a powerful acknowledgement of the persistent effort put in by IISE leadership. It indicates that the work being done is not just operating at a high level among student organizations at Purdue, but is at the highest level among more than 200 global student chapters of IISE. The award rewards overall membership growth and student chapter membership over the last fifteen years, both of which Purdue has been incredibly effective in.
“Without a doubt the number one factor to our success is our people,” says IISE president Zachary Byington. “Not only is the board a community of friends, but it’s a community of achievers. We are where we are thanks to the time given by hundreds of people across years.” Though IISE’s commitment to providing professional development opportunities is unmatched, they also provide a community for IEs to connect within. If students want to get involved, they can join as a general member and gain access to dozens of events and workshops held by IISE. There are also opportunities for leadership, as board applications open at the start of every semester. Regardless, Byington encourages all students to get involved in any organizations they are interested in, as that is where they can find fulfillment.
