Wachs Led Center Builds Momentum
Purdue University’s Edwardson School of Industrial Engineering recently launched the Center for AI and Robotic Excellence in Medicine (CARE) in Indianapolis, a collaborative initiative advancing the use of artificial intelligence and robotics in clinical care.
Led by James H. and Barbara H. Greene Professor Juan Wachs, CARE brings together Purdue University, the Indiana University School of Medicine's Department of Surgery, and other collaborators to develop technologies that improve surgical precision, expand remote and rural care, and support clinicians in high-stakes medical environments.

CARE’s work focuses on AI-driven surgical systems, embodied AI, field and frontier medicine, and autonomous diagnostic technologies, while also strengthening partnerships among researchers, clinicians, government and industry leaders. The center has already hosted workshops and an active seminar series featuring experts in micro-robotics, medical imaging and minimally invasive therapies, helping establish Indianapolis as a growing hub for AI-powered medicine and medical robotics research.
