Student Spotlight: Caleb Jessup
Choosing Purdue and Industrial Engineering
“I wanted a major that challenged me,” Caleb shared. His choice of Purdue was driven by the university’s exceptional engineering curriculum and reputation. Initially uncertain about his specific field within engineering, Caleb explored various options during his first year. Ultimately, he gravitated towards industrial engineering due to its diverse curriculum, which aligned with his interests in manufacturing, probability, and statistics.

Real-World Experience Through Internships
Caleb has made the most of his college years by pursuing impactful internships. Over three summers, he gained valuable hands-on experience in different industries:
- Ryobi Die Casting – Caleb's first internship after his freshman year offered him exposure to manufacturing operations in a local Indiana plant.
- General Motors – Following his sophomore year, Caleb took on manufacturing engineering responsibilities at GM, further solidifying his interest in the field.
- Elanco Animal Health – This past summer, Caleb ventured into the supply chain sector, working as a global supply chain intern. This role broadened his perspective on business operations.
These varied experiences have reinforced Caleb’s passion for manufacturing, a field he envisions pursuing full-time post-graduation.
A Leader Among Peers
Beyond academics and internships, Caleb has been an active contributor to the Purdue community, particularly through his involvement with the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE). Until recently Caleb served as Vice President of Internal Operations. During his time in the role Caleb oversaw the internal workings of Purdue’s IISE chapter, the largest student chapter in the nation with over 300 members and 50 board members.
“It’s been an incredible experience leading and coordinating such a large organization,” Caleb said. His leadership journey began as a board member during his sophomore year, followed by two directorship roles before assuming his vice-presidential position, which concluded at the end of the fall semester of 2024.
Reflecting on the Purdue IE Experience
When asked about his favorite aspect of Purdue’s School of Industrial Engineering, Caleb emphasized the people. “The professors are passionate about their work, and the students are equally impressive,” he noted. He also credited individuals like Dr. Son, whose leadership has shaped the direction of the Edwardson School of Industrial Engineering, and his academic advisor, Daniel Roberts, who provided invaluable guidance and support throughout his time at Purdue.
Beyond Academics
Caleb also finds ways to unwind and stay connected to his roots. "I'm a huge sports fan. I love Purdue basketball, football, and volleyball. Attending these events has been incredible," he said. Caleb also shared his enthusiasm for the Colts and Notre Dame football, with the exception of games against Purdue. Golf, a hobby he pursued throughout high school, remains a passion, though time constraints make it challenging. “Hopefully, I can pick it up again this spring,” he added.
