Purdue IE Students and Faculty Honored with Numerous Awards at HFES ASPIRE Annual Meeting

The international Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES) recently held its annual international meeting ASPIRE (Advance Systems and Practices through Innovation, Research and Education.)

The event took place from September 9th through the 13th in Phoenix, Arizona. The five-day event featured more than 600 technical presentations through a variety of workshops, special sessions, keynotes and panels.

The Purdue HFES Chapter was awarded with its 15th Gold Chapter Award. The HFES Purdue Chapter is a multidisciplinary organization composed of numerous students and faculty working in the fields of Industrial Engineering and Psychology. The chapter focuses on research in human performance, technology design, and human-computer interaction, emphasizing the need for safe, efficient, and cost-effective operations, maintenance, and training.

Second year PhD student Jing Zang, won the Student Member with Honor Award. Zang is advised by Associate Professor Brandon Pitts, Director of the Next-generation Human-systems and Cognitive Engineering (NHanCE) Lab in the School of Industrial Engineering. Last year, she served as co-president of the HFES Purdue Chapter, and this year she is the president. Zang and her team also won the Usability Method Planning Competition on the Student Career and Professional Day. Her team aimed to design and plan several methods to test how home devices, incorporating a large language model (LLM) can assist older adults with their possible needs.

Myeongkyu Lee, also a second year PhD student in the NHanCE lab advised by Dr. Pitts, received multiple honors for his research paper titled "The Impact of System Confidence and Reliability on Drivers' Decision-Making in Conditionally Automated Vehicles."  For this work Lee was awarded the 2024 Surface Transportation Technical Group (STTG) Best Student Paper award and the 2024 K-HFES Affinity Group Best Student Paper award.

The STTG is interested in human factors to exchange information, methodologies, and ideas related to the international surface transportation field. This group's interest encompasses numerous modes for conveying humans and resources: passenger, commercial, and military vehicles, both on- and off-road; mass transit; maritime transportation; rail transit, including Vessel Traffic Services (VTS); pedestrian and bicycle traffic; and highway and infrastructure systems, including Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). The K-HFES is Korean-American Affinity Group in North America, which was established in 2020 to serve the needs of human factors and ergonomics profession for scholars and practitioners with Korean heritage in North America including the United States and Canada

PhD student Cassandra McCormack, advised by Professor Barrett Caldwell, presented during the Wednesday poster session. Professor Caldwell presented during the Wednesday “Posters with Fellows” session and delivered an oral presentation on Thursday.  The research paper for the Thursday presentation titled, "Effects of Weather Information Observability and Uncertainty on Pilot Assessment of Weather Conditions and Decision Making" with 1st year Master's student Evv Boerwinkle as a supplemental author, received the 2024 Best Paper award from the Aerospace Systems Technical Group (ASTG).  The ASTG is concerned with the application of human factors to the development, design, certification, operation, and maintenance of human-machine systems in aviation and space environments. The group addresses issues for civilian and military systems in the realms of performance and safety.
