Indian Institute of Technology, Madras Honors IE Professor and IE Alumnus

Professor Srinivasan Chandrasekar and IE Alumnus Soundar Kumara (PhD IE 1985), have both been honored as IIT Madras' 2024 Distinguished Alumni.

Kumara is a 1977 graduate of IIT Madras (MT) was also awarded as an Outstanding Industrial Engineer by the School of Industrial Engineering in 2022. Kumara is the Allen E. Pearce and Allen M. Pearce Professor of Industrial Engineering at Penn State.  He is the founder of the Intelligent Design and Diagnostics Research Laboratory at PSU, now called the Laboratory for Intelligent Systems and Analytics (LISA). His work on AI has been covered in ISE Magazine, and he has earned research awards from both IISE and ASME. SME named Kumara one of the 20 Most Influential Academics in Smart Manufacturing in 2021.

Chandrasekar is a 1981 graduate of IIT Madras (BT), and is a Professor of Industrial Engineering with a courtesy appointment in Materials Engineering. Chandrasekar also currently runs the Center for Materials Processing and Tribology (CMPT) lab at Purdue. In 2011, he was elected as a fellow to the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). He is the recipient of ASME’s 2019 Milton C. Shaw Manufacturing Research Medal, which recognized his outstanding contributions to the field of materials manufacturing.
