Scutari receives awards

Assoc. Prof. Gesualdo Scutari
Associate Professor Aldo Scutari has received several awards and grants in the past few months.

He:
  • Received the 2015 Anna Maria Molteni Award for Mathematics and Physics from the Italian Scientists and Scholars of North America Foundation (ISSNAF).
  • Received a new grant from the Office of Naval Research (ONR) for “Distributed On-line Optimization and Learning for Nonconvex Big Data Analytics over Dynamic Networks”. Project summary: With pervasive sensors continuously collecting massive amounts of information as well as advances in computing, communication, and storage technologies, this is an era of data deluge. Modeling, processing and ultimately making sense of these massive-scale data sets is expected to bring ground-breaking advances in many defense applications, including distributed control, communication and decision support for tactical networks; assisted navigation and tactical surveillance applications; and multimodal information networks, just to name a few. The sheer volume of the data to be processed, together with the growing complexity of the data models (possibly nonconvex and nonlinear) and the increasingly distributed nature of the data sources presents major challenges to the modern big data analytics.
  • Co-authored a paper with former graduate student Peiran Song and others, “Decomposition by Partial Linearization: Parallel Optimization of Multiuser Systems”, for which Song won the 2015 IEEE Signal Processing Society Young Author Best Paper Award. The paper was published by IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing [February 2014, 62(3), 641-656], and was co-authored by Gesualdo Scutari, Francisco Facchinei, Daniel P. Palomar, and Jong-Shi Pang. The IEEE Signal Processing (SP) Young Author Best Paper Award is the most prestigious award given by the IEEE Signal Processing Society to honor the author(s) of a paper of exceptional merit dealing with a subject related to the Society's technical scope, and appearing in one of the Society's owned transactions in the last five years from the date of the award.
