ABSTRACT

In 2015, McKinsey and Company estimated the value created by the Internet of Things would be between $4 Trillion and $11 Trillion by 2025. Until now, only a small fraction has been realized. We discuss how we can unlock that value using Smart Manufacturing Technologies (e.g., AI, IoT, 5G, Real-time Systems Analytics) and their impact on productivity, responsiveness, and supply chain resiliency. We will discuss the five grand challenges in Smart Manufacturing and how we are responding at Purdue through a new Purdue Engineering Initiative (PEI) in Manufacturing and Operations spanning five colleges (Business, Engineering, Agriculture, Science, and Polytechnic) and our national efforts in branding Purdue Manufacturing & Operations. We explore why Small and Medium Manufactures (SMMs) play such a critical role, what future research is required, and how a carefully constructed manufacturing innovation ecosystem could enable SMMs to flourish.
