TITLE: "Recent Advances in Coating Development for Cutting Tool Applications"
ABSTRACT
This presentation will provide an overview of recent advances in coating development for cutting tool applications. Both physical vapor deposition (PVD) and chemical vapour deposition (CVD) techniques will be covered. Results from selected case studies will be presented with focus on investigating wear mechanisms of coated tools.
BIO
Dr. Rachid M’Saoubi received his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering in 1998 at Ecole Nationale Supérieure D’Arts et Métiers (ENSAM) in Paris, France. He joined the Swedish Institute for Metals Research (SIMR, Stockholm) in 1998 where he conducted research projects in cooperation with cutting tool manufacturers and steel companies. Since 2006, he has been at Seco Tools (part of the Sandvik group), as an R&D expert in the Materials and Technology department. His research interests are in machining processes, encompassing topics such as surface integrity, tool wear mechanisms and machining performance. Some of the key achievements of Dr. R. M’Saoubi are development and application of experimental methods for studying thermal, microstructural and tribological aspects of machining processes. Examples include development of infrared sensing methods for tool temperature measurement, and application of X- Ray and Electron Back Scattered Diffraction (EBSD) methods for studying deformation in manufacturing processes. He is a Fellow of the International Academy of
Production Engineering (CIRP), and has served as chairman of the CIRP Scientific Technical Committee (STC C) dedicated to cutting processes.
