In the early part of this century, The National Academy of Engineering laid out a vision of holistic professional formation to enable engineers to meet the challenges of complex or "wicked" problems. In 2020, we find ourselves confronting multiple situations best characterized as a "social mess" - problems marked by complexity, uncertainty, conflicting values, and a lack of agreement about problem definition itself.

From climate change to the coronavirus pandemic to an engineering ecosystem that is durably inequitable, the School of Engineering Education at Purdue University answers the call to rise to the challenges of our day. We continue to advance knowledge and improve the state of the art in preparing students for these challenges, while rising to meet challenges of our own.
