The Gap Between Professor’s Expectations and Graduate Student Skill Levels in Data Management

This talk will describe the findings from a three year investigation of data management experiences and needs conducted at five institutions in six STEM disciplines. The goal of the research project was to identify needed data management skills and develop educational interventions to meet those gaps. This presentation focuses on a content analysis done on interviews with the STEM professors and graduate students. This presentation will highlight the results of two research questions: How well do graduate students perform (in the professor’s opinion) on specific data information literacy tasks? Where do professors believe students are learning data management and literacy skills? The seminar will include discussion on the research and teaching implications of the study and how graduate education may be influenced by the results.
