GOALS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE BSCE PROGRAM

Mission of the School

The mission of the Purdue School of Civil Engineering, in recognition of Purdue University’s role as the Indiana land grant institution, is to excel in the sciences and arts of the fields of Civil Engineering through education, scholarship, research and service. (Reaffirmed March 2014)

Goals of the School

The goals of the Purdue School of Civil Engineering are to:

  • Provide an educational experience of highest quality to our undergraduate and graduate students through a program of study that accommodates the individual's interests and career goals
  • Provide a solid foundation for those students who wish to pursue graduate studies
  • Maintain national and international leadership in advancing engineering knowledge through research and scholarship
  • Serve the engineering profession, industry, and University, the State, and society with valuable leadership, participation, and knowledge.
  • Provide graduates with the opportunity to join the family of Purdue CE alumni who are playing leading roles in the practice of civil engineering worldwide

BSCE Program Objectives

The objective of the School of Civil Engineering is to prepare graduates to successfully pursue their professional career objectives in a civil engineering-related field. The School considers this objective to be realized if a majority of graduates:

  1. Are employed in a civil engineering or closely related profession or are pursuing an advanced degree.
  2. Would agree with the statement that the knowledge, work skills, and personal qualities developed during their education in the School have appropriately prepared them for their career.

Undergraduate Student Program Outcomes

  1. Students will demonstrate an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering (ABET outcome a)
  2. Students will demonstrate an ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data (ABET outcome b)
  3. Students will demonstrate an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability (ABET outcome c)
  4. Students will demonstrate an ability to function on multidisciplinary teams (ABET outcome d)
  5. Students will demonstrate an ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems (ABET outcome e)
  6. Students will demonstrate an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility (ABET outcome f)
  7. Students will demonstrate an ability to communicate effectively (ABET outcome g)
  8. Students will demonstrate the broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context (ABET outcome h)
  9. Students will demonstrate a recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning (ABET outcome i)
  10. Students will demonstrate a knowledge of contemporary issues (ABET outcome j)
  11. Students will demonstrate an ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice (ABET outcome k)
