Dr. Shirley Dyke, Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Civil Engineering, was presented with the 2017 CE Outstanding Mentor of Engineering Graduate Students Award at a reception on April 10th hosted by the Civil Engineering Graduate Student Advisory Council (CEGSAC).

The nomination process within the school of CE was led by CEGSAC.  Graduate students collaborated in groups of 3 or more to submit statements of 500 words or less, focusing on a single characteristic or action that made the faculty member outstanding. Former students also submitted letters of support. A committee of 5 students read the applications anonymously and ranked them based on a predetermined grading rubric. 10 nominations for 10 different faculty members were received.

Here is a sampling of what Dr. Dyke's students had to say about her:

“Dr. Shirley Dyke is an exceptional mentor who supports the professional development of her students. This can clearly be seen by her efforts to develop their professional networks. She consistently encourages her students to present at conferences, and helps them in advance to rehearse. As her students prepare to start their careers, she expand her support through the detailed review of job applications and coordination of mock interviews.”
