CCE Undergrad Spotlight — Mason Nichols
Hometown: Fort Wayne, Indiana
Current year: Senior
Mason says he loves the internship requirement for construction engineering students which afforded him the opportunity to intern for the Walt Disney Company.
Why I chose Purdue Civil and Construction Engineering
I knew I wanted to go to Purdue University. My parents are alums, the university is known around the world, and I have always loved the campus. I didn’t know I wanted to attend the Lyles School of Civil and Construction Engineering, however, until partway through my first year. When I learned more about the school — specifically the construction side of it — and required internships, I knew this would be the place for me.
Emphasis area
I am in construction engineering. For me, it mixes creativity and math in a way that really appeals to me. And through its required internships, I have been granted so many experiential opportunities that I could not have learned by just going to class.
Mason plays the saxophone in the Purdue Jazz Band.
Purdue Jazz Band
I play saxophone in the Purdue Jazz Band. I have been playing for eight years now and what I really love about playing jazz is just the free nature of it. You can just go on stage and start playing and adapt as you go. I have always considered myself an artist and it’s through music that I’ve found a way to tell a story.
After I graduate
After I graduate, I plan to enter the construction industry. With what I have learned at Purdue and the experience I have gained at my five internships, I feel I am completely prepared to start my career.
