CE Undergrad Spotlight — Kyra Fales

When Purdue Civil Engineering undergraduate Kyra Fales was looking for a university, she wanted three things: a strong civil engineering school, study abroad opportunities, and a co-op program. She found them all at Purdue University where she has been able to work for a civil engineering firm in Indianapolis and study abroad in Ecuador.

Hometown: Cincinnati, Ohio

Why I chose Purdue Civil Engineering

When I was looking at which university that I wanted to attend, I knew I wanted it to have a strong civil engineering program as well as research abroad and co-op opportunities. Purdue University hit all of those marks for me — and the more I learned about it and the Lyles School of Civil Engineering, the surer I felt that it was the right place for me.

Co-op focused

The co-op program has really strengthened my understanding and abilities as a civil engineer. At my co-op, I worked for HNTB in Indianapolis. The work I have been able to do already has made me feel like a member of the civil engineering team. Over the years, my responsibilities at the civil engineering firm have increased to the point where I’ve been told that I am doing things a typical intern would never get the chance to do.

Study abroad

The opportunity to study abroad was also a key determining factor for me when coming to Purdue — and I am extremely happy to have had the experience. I had been studying Spanish since seventh grade, so I really wanted to study in a Spanish-speaking country. I studied in Ecuador and it was an incredible experience for me. I knew I would learn a lot overseas, but I never expected to make so many long-lasting friendships as well.

After I graduate

Another great experience for me has been from my involvement in student organizations here at Purdue. I am a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers at Purdue, the Women in Engineering Program, and am a Professional Practice Ambassador. I’ve even helped plan a dance marathon on campus. Purdue provides students with so many ways to get involved, learn, and makes friends — and I cannot be happier with my decision to come here.
