Why I chose Purdue Civil Engineering

Going to Purdue University was never in doubt for me. My parents are both alumni and I have loved the Boilermakers my whole life. What I wasn’t so sure on was what I wanted to major in. When I first came to Purdue, I looked into other schools and programs, but — after taking a few civil engineering-related courses and learning more about the discipline — I discovered that this was the perfect place for me.

Emphasis area

My emphasis area is in Structural Engineering. Like my decision to enroll in the Lyles School of Civil Engineering, my choice to pursue the Structural Engineering discipline wasn’t something I knew I wanted to do right away. Over my time as a civil engineering student, though, I found that what interested me most was the design and construction of bridges and buildings.

Klayton has worked as a civil engineering intern for three semesters where he has worked out in the field and in the office and gained a tremendous amount of real-world experience.

Life-long Boilermaker

I have been coming to Purdue’s campus since I was a baby. My parents are alumni and they would travel to West Lafayette every year to catch a football or basketball games — and they always brought me with them. I was such a veteran at tailgating as a child, that I ended up being the tailgate cook for the family by age 6. Now that I’m here, I’ve joined the Paint Crew and do what I can to support our Boilermakers.

After I graduate

After I graduate in May 2023, I will continue to study Structural Engineering as I work toward my Master’s degree through Purdue’s 4+1 Program. I want to learn and experience more of civil engineering so that when I begin my career I am in the best position possible to succeed.

A life-long Boilermaker fan, Klayton has been tailgating for as long as he can remember. As a student, he joined the Paint Crew to continue his support.
