CE Undergrad Spotlight: Haydn Malackowski
Hometown: Chesterson, Indiana
Current year: Junior
Haydn works as a research assistant for Purdue Civil Engineering with an emphasis on Transportation Engineering.
Why I chose Purdue Civil Engineering
I knew I wanted to pursue a degree in a field where I could make a real difference. Once I realized I wanted to become a civil engineer, Purdue University was an easy choice. It is an incredible, in-state university that I had grown up loving, thanks to my Boilermaker parents.
Emphasis area
My emphasis area is in Transportation. One of the biggest things that connects just about every person is the need for travel. It is also something we need to constantly maintain and improve upon — especially as we get closer and closer to seeing more electronic and autonomous vehicles on the roads. There are so many problems that still need solving before we reach that future and I want to help solve them.
Haydn is a board member of the Paint Crew.
Black and Gold
Through different career fairs here at Purdue, I have been able to secure a number of internships while at college. Every summer since my freshman year I have had the opportunity to work with — and learn from — civil engineering companies. My experiences have been wonderful and they have really confirmed for me that this is what I want to do for the rest of my life — and all these opportunities were so much easier to achieve thanks to Purdue, its career fairs, and encouragement to pursue internships.
After I graduate
After I graduate, I plan to earn my Master’s degree here at Purdue through its 4+1 program. I believe that before I enter the career field, it will be important to have that extra experience and knowledge that a Purdue Master’s degree can provide.
A lifelong Boilermaker fan, Haydn says he tried to attend just about every home game Purdue Sports has to offer.
