Why I chose Civil Engineering

When I first went to college in 1997, I wanted to be a video game designer and got my degree in computer information systems. I then worked in computer repair and digital imaging but I just felt like this wasn’t what I was meant to do. I had this feeling that there was something else out there for me.

I then just happened to be watching a program about the world’s largest structures. The feature piece was on the Millau Viaduct in France — the tallest bridge in the world. And I thought that the engineering that they were doing from conception to the design, all the way through construction was absolutely incredible. That really sparked my passion.

Emphasis area

I chose structural engineering because, long-term, I see myself being part of those long-lasting projects that last for generations and will one day be featured in a video of my own. I want to be part of the next, once-in-a-lifetime, large-scale engineering project that people will look at and marvel for years to come.

Darryl is a second degree black belt in judo and is also an instructor.

Judo master

Another passion of mine is Judo. I have a second degree black belt and am also an instructor. I find the discipline and dedication needed to succeed in martial arts translates into all aspects of life — including my studies.

Student leader

I am also the president of Chi Epsilon — Purdue Civil Engineering’s honor society. It was an honor to be selected by fellow students to serve as president. Since coming here a few years ago, the students have been incredible to work and study with and they are a major reason why I have loved just about every minute here at Purdue.
