Catalog description: Introduction and need for ground engineering; engineering behavior and properties of different problematic soils; liquefaction assessment; description, operation, design and quality assessment/control of different ground engineering techniques, such as deep dynamic compaction, vibro-compaction, vibro-replacement (stone columns), explosive compaction, preloading with vertical drains; ground modification by admixtures and grouting.
Prerequisites: Undergraduate level CCE383 (Geotechnical Engineering I) Minimum Grade of C
Course status: Technical elective, breadth course
Specific goals for the course
Student learning outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course the student shall be able to:
Understand the engineering behavior and properties of different problematic soils.
Understand the advantages and limitations of different ground engineering techniques and their suitability for effective treatment of different soil types.
Design appropriate ground engineering techniques for different soil types.
Plan compaction quality control for embankment and road construction.
Perform liquefaction assessment for potentially liquefiable soil profiles.
Perform slope stability analysis of embankments over pre- and post-improved soft ground.
Relationship of course to program outcomes
Outcome 1: an ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.
Outcome 2: an ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create, a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives (assessment based on final project).
Outcome 3: An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences (assessment based on final project presentation).
