CCE 45700 – Design of Air Pollution Control Systems
Credits and contact hours
3 credits
Lecture that meets 2 times per week for 75 minutes per meeting for 15 weeks
Specific course information
Catalog description: Fundamental concepts and design procedures for the removal of particulates, gases, and toxic air pollutants from waste gas streams. Problem assessment; characterization of exhaust gas streams; fan characteristics
Prerequisites: CCE 340 or equivalent with minimum grade of C-
Course status: Elective course
Specific goals for the course
Student learning outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course the student shall be able to:
functionally and operationally understand the U.S. Clean Air Act and how it affects the public, corporations, private businesses and government
apply the principles of the motion of particles, aerosols and gases in an exhaust gas stream to achieve the regulatory requirements of local, state and federal stationary source emission standards via design and implementation of air pollution control hardware or process material substitution
design hoods, ductwork, stacks, vents and select the appropriate fan for the collection and transport of particles, aerosols and gases
work in design teams toward a common air pollution engineering control objective for a specified industrial, commercial or municipal air pollution problem
Relationship of course to program outcomes
Outcome 1: An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.
Outcome 5: An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives
Topics
Clean Air Act, National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) and emission standards (existing and new source performance standards)
Historical considerations of air pollution emissions, team setups and industrial, commercial or municipal process air pollution control challenge
Discussion of types of air pollutants and health effects
10 minute team presentations on their selected air pollution challenge
Discussion of team specific industrial/commercial or municipal air pollution problem
Air permits: construction, operational, registrations, PSD, Title IV
Review of fluid mechanics, static, velocity, total pressures,
Emission factors, compliance emission stack tests: EPA test methods for selected pollutants
