Sogand Hasanzadeh receives ELECTRI International 2020 Early Career Award

Sogand Hasanzadeh, assistant professor in the Lyles School of Civil Engineering and the Division of Construction Engineering and Management, has received the Thomas Glavinich ELECTRI International 2020 Early Career Award. The six-month Early Career Award study, Examining a Latent Side-Effect of Electrical Safety Interventions among T&D Line Workers, will utilize an immersive mixed-reality combined with wearable sensors to empirically examine the risk perception and risk-taking behavior of T&D line workers as a function of the number and type of fall and electrical safety interventions in place for their protection.

CE offers affordable online master’s degree via edX

Purdue Engineering is offering a new online master’s degree in its civil engineering master’s program - through edX. The online master's will start in January 2021 with the same faculty and courses as the on-campus master's program, ranked 6th in the nation by U.S. News & World Report.

Key tests say SpeedCore needs no fire protection

Research performed at the Bowen Laboratory on a modular system of tied dual-plate walls field-filled with concrete, dubbed SpeedCore, shows that the Lego-like system's walls do not need costly fire protection, known to slow construction, especially inside elevator hoistways. SpeedCore is the brainchild of CE alumnus Ron Klemencic, chairman and CEO of Magnusson Klemencic Associates.

More people are speeding during the pandemic, but the number of speeding tickets has decreased. The Indy Star quoted Civil Engineering’s Darcy Bullock explaining that while law enforcement is effective at getting people to slow down while they're present, the effect goes away when the troopers do.
