Purdue team wins IATR 2016-2017 Hackathon final

The Purdue transportation student team Boiler Hackers (Xinwu Qian, Wenbo Zhang, Shubham Agarwal, and Hemant Gehlot) recently won the 2016-2017 IATR HACK-A-THON final competition. Their winning proposal involved serving autonomous electric taxis at existing urban parking facilities.

Prof. Robert Frosch named Editor-in-Chief of ACI Structural Journal Editorial Board

Robert Frosch, Professor of Civil Engineering, has been named Editor-in-Chief of the ACI Structural Journal Editorial Board. The ACI Structural Journal has been publishing research on the design of structural concrete from many of the brightest minds in the concrete industry since ACI began publishing journals back in December 1912.

Robert J. Connor named 2018 T.R. Higgins Lectureship Award winner

Robert J. Connor, Professor of Civil Engineering and Director of CAI and S-BRITE, has been selected as the winner of the 2018 AISC T.R. Higgins Lectureship Award. Presented annually, the award recognizes a lecturer and author whose technical paper or papers, published during the eligibility period, are considered an outstanding contribution to engineering literature on fabricated structural steel.

Darcy Bullock named Lyles Family Professor of Civil Engineering

The Board of Trustees has approved the naming of Darcy Bullock as the Lyles Family Professor of Civil Engineering. Bullock joined Purdue in 1998 as a civil engineering faculty member. He has been honored by the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Transportation Research Board and was named a Purdue University Faculty Scholar, 2005-2010.

Professor Emeritus Manuel Garcia-Lopez - A success story that started at Purdue

Manuel Garcia-Lopez has dedicated his academic and professional life to the study, research, and development of geotechnics. He has taught for 52 consecutive years at Universidad Nacional in Colombia and approximately 45 years at the university he co-founded, Escuela Colombiana de Ingenieria. A major building block of his successful career were his Masters studies in soil mechanics and foundation engineering at Purdue.

Chinese general and CE alumnus honored in DC

Chinese war hero and U.S. ally Sun Li-jen, known as "the ever-victorious general" for his feats in World War II, was recently recognized on the floor of the U.S. Congress. Sun Li-jen was also one of our school's earliest international students, graduating with a degree in civil engineering from Purdue in 1924.

Lyles research impacts African dams

PhD student Jessica Eisma has completed a one-year project studying sand dams in Tanzania. In 2016, Eisma was awarded a pair of prestigious research grants — totaling more than $45,000 — from the Fulbright U.S. Student Program and the U.S. Borlaug Fellows in Global Food Security Program to study the ecological impact of sand dams in Tanzania. She flew to Africa in August 2016 to begin her study, which is the basis for her doctoral thesis.

Purdue CE's undergrad program ranked #7 in the nation

The Purdue Lyles School of Civil Engineering has been recognized as a top 10 undergraduate program in the country. U.S. News & World Report has released its national rankings of undergrad programs for 2018 with Purdue Civil Engineering ranked #7 in the nation. The rankings are computed from the responses to a survey sent to deans, heads, and selected senior faculty. Purdue CE has been consistently ranked as a top 10 graduate program by U.S. News & World Report for over a decade.

Seungjae Lee receives 2017 ASHRAE graduate award

PhD student Seungjae Lee was recently named recipient of the prestigious American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Grant-in-Aid Award for 2017-2018. This $10,000 award is given to the most outstanding graduate students performing research in the High Performance Buildings or HVAC fields.

Seyed Ali Ghahari receives scholarship to attend MIT workshop

Lyles CE graduate student Seyed Ali Ghahari was recently awarded a competitive scholarship from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to attend the Modeling and Simulation of Transportation Networks Workshop that took place in Cambridge, July 31 – August 4, 2017.
