Phillip Dunston has been appointed Dean’s Faculty Fellow for HBCU engagement, and James Krogmeier has been appointed associate dean for facilities and operations in the College of Engineering.

Dunston’s appointment was effective Jan. 1. Dunston, a professor of construction engineering who holds joint appointments in the Lyles School of Civil Engineering and in the Division of Construction Engineering and Management, joined the faculty at Purdue in 2002. In 2003, he received the NSF Early Career Award.

Dunston’s research portfolio includes construction automation; monitoring, control and quality of field construction operations, particularly in transportation; construction visualization; and simulator-based training effectiveness for construction equipment operators.

A career-long passion of Dunston’s has been to address the challenge of stimulating and expanding the pipeline of underrepresented students to PhD and faculty careers. Toward that end, he has been a part of both NSF- and Purdue-sponsored efforts. As Dean’s faculty fellow for HBCU engagement, Dunston will work with engineering associate deans and heads to grow partnerships between Purdue Engineering and HBCU’s for collaborative research and talent development.

Krogmeier, a professor of electrical and computer engineering with a courtesy appointment in civil engineering, will assume his new role on March 1, 2023. He has been on the ECE faculty since 1990.

Krogmeier’s research interests include wireless communications and statistical signal processing and applications in agriculture and transportation. He is currently a faculty leader in the Convergence Team of the NSF Engineering Research Center for The Internet of Things for Precision Agriculture and is Co-Director of OATS, the Open Ag Technology and Systems Center, a partnership between the colleges of Engineering and Agriculture.

Having previously served as associate head for facilities and planning in the Elmore Family School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Krogmeier brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to a critically important position. In addition to overseeing facilities, he also will oversee the operation of the Engineering Computer Network.
