Kenneth "Ken" Thieneman (BSCNE 1987), President/Owner of Thieneman, has received the 2025 Construction Engineering Outstanding Alumni Award.

Kenneth “Ken” Dale Thieneman is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Thieneman Construction, Inc., a self-performing environmental general contractor specializing in water and wastewater treatment solutions since 1999. Guided by its tagline, “Innovative Solutions, Brighter Futures,” the company has grown from a small startup into a respected industry leader known for its technical excellence, innovative delivery methods, and commitment to environmental stewardship. In addition to his work in heavy civil and environmental construction, Ken is the co-inventor of Algaewheel — the world’s most commercially advanced algal wastewater treatment technology — holding patents in more than 20 countries. Ken earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Construction Engineering and Management from Purdue University, where the blend of technical training and business education shaped his career trajectory. A proud Boilermaker, he continues to support Purdue by mentoring young engineers, recruiting graduates into the industry, and championing innovation in civil and construction engineering. Ken began his career with Bowen Engineering in 1988, where he advanced through multiple roles — from Superintendent to Project Manager, Senior Project Manager, and ultimately Vice President by 1997.

Extending his leadership into advanced manufacturing, Ken became a co-owner of Velo3D in December 2024 and has served as a board member since June 2024. In 2023, Velo3D was named one of Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies, underscoring its role in transforming industrial-scale metal additive manufacturing. In 2025, Ken launched the Thieneman Cares Initiative, which provides financial support and volunteer efforts to positively impact the communities the company serves. The initiative supports clean water projects, mentorships, and ministries for women and children — offering hope for a brighter future through time, talent, and resources. Additionally, Thieneman Cares partners with Heart Change, an organization dedicated to empowering marginalized women by offering them a renewed sense of community through the Love of Jesus Christ. Together with Shannon, his wife of 31 years, Ken also founded Thieneman Homes in 2000 and Thieneman Properties, LLC in 2007, expanding into residential and commercial real estate development. Ken is the proud father of four children. His daughter, Kiera, is an accomplished equestrian qualifying for Nationals with her American Warm Blood horse, Tourino. His sons, Jake and Brennan, began their collegiate football careers as walk-ons at Purdue, earning starting positions and serving as captains of the defense. Ken’s youngest son, Dillon, was a two-year starter and All-American at Purdue, and is currently continuing his football career at the University of Oregon.
