Irfanoglu joins reconnaissance team assessing the devastating destruction from deadly quakes in Turkey

Ayhan Irfanoglu spent his early childhood in the Turkish town of İskenderun, on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea and an hour’s drive from Antakya, the biblical city of Antioch. Returning to his home country following the series of massive earthquakes on Feb. 6 that have killed over 50,000 people, Irfanoglu says the devastation is overwhelming. But the Purdue University professor remains steadfast in his mission as a civil and structural engineer.

Purdue researchers return from East Palestine after derailment

A Purdue CE research team is back in town after a trip to the site of the Norfolk Southern train derailment. The team, led by CE/EEE Professor Andrew Whelton and several students, collected water samples from creeks and homes in East Palestine, Ohio, where a train derailed and spilled hazardous materials like vinyl chloride.

Purdue named national transportation center by USDOT

Purdue University, led by Prof. Satish Ukkusuri, will partner with a consortium led by Clemson University funded by a $4 million/year grant with a focus on transportation cybersecurity and resilience. The center will develop foundational tools and methods to test and mitigate cybersecurity risks in infrastructure systems.

Pablo Zavattieri, Jerry M. and Lynda T. Engelhardt Professor in Civil Engineering, has been elected a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The Fellow grade of membership recognizes exceptional engineering achievements and contributions to the engineering profession and to ASME.
