PUR-1 staff submit license amendment request for new digital system

Purdue Reactor staff recently announced the docketing of the License Amendment Request to upgrade the Instrumentation and Controls for Purdue University Reactor One. The amendment application will undergo Acceptance Review by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission over the next 30 days.

A public hearing was scheduled in Bethesda, MA on Thursday, March 16 and 17 for questions the NRC has regarding the application.

The new I&C will greatly enhance the teaching capabilities of Indiana’s only nuclear reactor. Neutron Flux Monitoring equipment, designed by Mirion Technologies and Scientech Corp., will provide high time resolution data points for all facility data. The system is incorporated into the Nuclear Engineering curriculum and fulfills an important part of the mission of Purdue’s land grant mission of public outreach.

In conjunction with building renovations, a recent license renewal, and power uprate, the reactor will be a premier teaching facility in the country and the world. The technological improvements provide a pedagogical framework, which will more readily relate to the next generation of Nuclear Engineers.

A video tour of the PUR-1 is now available to learn more about the history and operations at the facility. Watch the video.
