Nuclear Engineering headship named for decorated naval captain

In August, the Purdue University Board of Trustees approved the named headship for the School of Nuclear Engineering. A generous gift from Capt. James F. McCarthy, Jr. and Cheryl E. McCarthy has created the named headship.

Capt. James F. McCarthy, Jr. graduated from Purdue University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nuclear Engineering in 1979, which created his foundation for a successful career in the United States Navy.

As we welcome everyone back to another exciting year of Purdue Nuclear Engineering, I feel greatly honored to reach out to you as a new Head of the School of Nuclear Engineering. I am humbled to serve such a prestigious program with rich history and a legacy of impeccable excellence in both education and research. While I am so grateful for what we've accomplished in the past, I look forward to continuing our legacy in the days ahead of us.

Hagen (Ph. D.) and Loveless (Graduate) receive notable recognition

Alexander Hagen (Thesis Advisor: Dr. Rusi Taleyarkhan) has been awarded a prize in the Competition for Students at Universities with Less than $600 Million in 2015 R&D Expenditures.

Purdue Nuclear Engineering graduate student, Amanda Loveless was recently announced as a recipient of a Directed Energy Professional Society (DEPS) graduate scholarship for the 2017-2018 academic year.

School of Nuclear Engineering supports inaugural symposium on applied spectroscopy and photonics

Purdue University will hold its first Symposium on Applied Spectroscopy and Photonics: From Cells to Cosmos in September. This event is attracting top researchers in the field, with subjects ranging from Mars exploration to biomedical engineering.

The symposium will be on September 16, 2017 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Thomas S. and Harvey D. Wilmeth Active Learning Center, and is being organized by Purdue’s chapter of the Society for Applied Spectroscopy.

Professor Abdel-Khalik Leads Effort to Increase Cybersecurity for Nuclear Power Plants

Cybersecurity for nuclear power plants is the focus of a new collaboration between government and academia, led by Purdue University’s Hany Abdel-Khalik.

The National Academy of Engineering has identified cybersecurity as one of the most complex issues engineering has ever faced. As engineering systems become more sophisticated, it gets harder to think about all the ways they can be compromised.
