NE Associate Professor Allen L. Garner and his fellow SCALE teammates were recently recognized with a Seed for Success award at the 2020 Excellence in Research awards ceremony. The team was acknowledged for its efforts that resulted in $20M in funding.

In the College of Engineering's latest Medium blog post, Nuclear Engineering Professor Shripad Revankar discusses next-generation reactors, known as Generation IV, and how they can be integrated with renewable generating sources, are less expensive than their predecessors, burn nuclear waste as an energy resource, and are “walk-away” safe. The most likely Generation IV reactor to be commercialized is the Very High Temperature Reactor (VHTR), and a Purdue team has proposed novel experimental research with the goal of developing a scaled experimental facility to study a VHTR building response in the event of a depressurization accident.

Arden L. Bement Jr., the David A. Ross Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Nuclear Engineering at Purdue and former head of the Purdue University School of Nuclear Engineering, has been named the 2020 recipient of the Arthur M. Bueche Award by the National Academy of Engineering (NAE).

On Purdue Day of Giving 2020, Nuclear Engineering Alumnus Don MacFarlane made a new estate gift of $90,000 to support the Donald R. MacFarlane Scholarship Endowment in Nuclear Engineering. This gift, combined with his original 2013 estate gift of $100,000 to the same scholarship fund, will ultimately benefit undergraduate Nuclear Engineering students for many generations to come.

A Ph.D. student in Nuclear Engineering, Paul Stockett, won first prize in the Innovations in Nuclear Technology R&D Awards - an award sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Nuclear Technology R&D for innovative nuclear technology.

Yi Xie has joined the faculty of Nuclear Engineering as an assistant professor in Summer of 2020. Yi received her B.S. in nuclear engineering from the University of Science and Technology in China and her Ph.D. degree in nuclear engineering from The Ohio State University.

Superbugs have strengthened themselves over time against traditionally effective antibiotic therapies. Professor Allen Garner's research group is devising a counterattack — using pulsed electric fields alongside conventional antibiotics to better kill the germs.
