Catalog description: This course provides a forum on issues in the civil engineering profession in a contemporary context. Topics include professionalism and ethics, entrepreneurship, cultural differences, and global collaboration. Students interact with engineering faculty as well as professionals from outside the university who provide guidance on the preparation of individual plans of study and information on civil engineering career options. Students learn and apply fundamental aspects of written communication in professional settings. Emphasis is placed on delivery of technical and managerial content.
Prerequisites: Sophomore status in the school of Civil Engineering

Specific goals for the course
Student learning outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course the student shall be able to:
Apply standards of professional communication to the most common writing tasks required by the school and profession of civil engineering
Judge ethical dilemmas according to the six fundamental canons of professional engineers
Related the actions of civil engineers to the establishment and maintenance of human places and the effects of those places on the larger world
Define and implement principles of audience-focused communication to any writing task
Differentiate between the various specialties within the field of civil engineering so as to make informed career decisions
Relationship of course to program outcomes
Outcome 3: An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences
Outcome 4: An ability to recognized ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, and environmental contexts
