Alberto Castillo receives ACI Research in Progress award
Grad student Alberto Castillo was the second-place winner in the Research in Progress session conducted by the American Concrete Institute showcasing research projects and leading-edge concrete technology throughout the world. Alberto received the recognition for his research presentation, "Comparison of Mechanical and Durability Properties of Lab and Field-Cured Concretes with Fly Ash and Nontraditional Pozzolans."
Alberto Castillo is a PhD candidate in the School of Civil and Construction Engineering at Purdue University, working under the guidance of Prof. Jan Olek and Prof. Mirian Velay-Lizancos. He holds both a Bachelor’s and Master of Science degrees in Civil Engineering from Purdue University. Alberto’s research focuses on enhancing the sustainability, durability, and performance of construction materials, with an emphasis on cementitious composites. His work investigates the use of nontraditional and natural pozzolans to improve concrete performance, the application of nanomaterials to enhance concrete properties, and strategies to increase its overall durability. Alberto’s other notable accomplishments include the award for Best Master Thesis across multiple disciplines at Purdue University, and receiving the Nellie Munson Excellence in Teaching Award from Purdue University.
