Strengthening the soil will decrease earthquake damage

An interdisciplinary group of researchers at Purdue University have found that adding small quantities of bentonite to fine sands reduces the risk of liquefaction. This NSF collaborative research project includes Purdue Civil Engineering Professors Antonio Bobet, Vincent P. Drnevich and Marika C. Santagata, Professor Cliff T. Johnston, Agronomy, and Professor Alexander Wei, Chemistry.

Purdue professors, city developers and industries collaborate to aid in critical energy project

On January 24, 2007 U.S. Senator Dick Lugar welcomed the collaboration of Purdue University, Clinton County, the city of Frankfort, Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM), and Indiana Clean Energy LLC (ICE) to produce methane for conversion to electricity. Senator Lugar's announcement praised the contribution to helping achieve energy independence and economic development. Professor Ron F. Turco, Agronomy, and Professor Loring F. Nies, Civil Engineering, are part of the Purdue team assisting in this project.

Airbags, antilock brakes not likely to reduce accidents, injuries

Researchers have determined that airbags and antilock braking systems do not reduce the likelihood of accidents or injuries because they may encourage more aggressive driving, thwarting the potential benefits of such safety features. Professor Fred L. Mannering states that these findings can contribute to improving advanced safety features.

Bob Krzeminski, BSCE 1970, MSCE 1976, has been inducted into the ITS Florida Honor Roll by the Intelligent Transportation Society of Florida in recognition for his distinguished career in transportation and substantial contribution to the Intelligent Transportation Systems Industry in Florida.

UniSource Energy announces vice president of finance and rates

Kentton C. Grant, BSCE 1981, has been promoted to Vice President of Finance and Rates for UniSource Energy Services. Grant has served as Assistant Treasurer and General Manager of Financial Planning for Tucson Electric Power (TEP), UniSource Energy's principal subsidiary. He will be responsible for corporate financing activities, financial planning and rate case preparation for TEP and its sister utilities, UNS Electric and UNS Gas, which do business under the name of UniSource Energy Services (UES).

The Transportation Research Board of the National Academies awarded Chuanxin Fang, Ph.D. 2003, and Assistant Professor Samuel Labi the Concrete Materials Section Bryant Mather Award for their research paper titled "Evaluating the Static Segregation Resistance of Hardened Self-Consolidating Concrete Using Image Processing Technology."
