Engineering Maymester in Sweden

In May 2015, 17 Purdue CE students visited Stockholm, Sweden, to study environmental sustainability across multiple sectors. The week-long session was led by Inez Hua, professor of civil engineering and professor of environmental and ecological engineering, and Jill Churchill, undergraduate international programs coordinator in the Office of Global Engineering Programs.

On July 23, 2015, the Lyles School of Civil Engineering celebrated the naming of a significant space in Hampton Hall of Civil Engineering. The Jack & Shirli Flack Family Gateway for Civil Engineering will serve as the central recruiting space for prospective students to the Lyles School of Civil Engineering.

TRB Recognition of JTRP Research Project for 2015 Best Paper Award

Professor Jan Olek’s paper, "Quick Determination of Freeze-Thaw Durability of Concrete Aggregate Using the Indiana DOT Hydraulic Fracture Test Equipment" was selected as the Transportation Research Board 2015 Best Paper for the Geology and Properties Section of the Mineral Aggregates Committee.

Dr. Pujol appointed Academic Director for Research Computing

Dr. Santiago Pujol has accepted the appointment of Academic Director for Research Computing. Dr. Pujol will provide faculty perspective, vision and direction for Purdue’s activities around cyberinfrastructure for research especially the HUBzero platform and the community cluster program.

President Daniels Highlights Several JTRP Initiatives in Senate Testimony

On June 25, President Daniels testified before the Senate Finance Committee. President Daniels’ opening remarks reference the Purdue Road School, an event co-sponsored by JTRP and LTAP. President Daniels has been a long-time supporter of the Purdue Road School, first participating when he gave the 2006 Road School Luncheon address during the launch of Major Moves and this past year when he hosted a session with Mayor Dennis on the innovative partnership between the City and Purdue on the State Street initiative.

Creature's 'dactyl club' filters shear waves to resist damage

The "smasher" peacock mantis shrimp is able to repeatedly pummel the shells of prey using a bizarre hammer-like appendage that, new research shows, can withstand rapid-fire blows by neutralizing certain frequencies of "shear waves."

Data-Driven Model/Damage Identification Workshop

A workshop was held at Bowen Laboratory June 7-8 to bring together an interdisciplinary group of experts in the area of data-driven modeling methods, especially those that focus on nonlinear system/model identification and damage detection to share experiences and foster opportunities.
