Role of the University in Education for Sustainability


Dr. Jean-Lou Chameau
President, California Institute of Technology

Jean-Lou Chameau began as President of Caltech in September 2006. Before that, he was provost and vice president for academic affairs at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Chameau received his secondary and undergraduate education in France and his graduate education in civil engineering from Stanford University. In 1980 he joined the civil engineering faculty at Purdue University, where he subsequently became full professor and head of the geotechnical engineering program. In 1991, he became the director of the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Georgia Tech. In 1994-95, he was the president of Golder Associates, Inc., an international geotechnical consulting company. At Georgia Tech, he was a Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar and Hightower Professor and was dean of the Georgia Tech. College of Engineering.

Abstract of Presentation:
Dr. Chameau will explore the challenge of inspiring young people to engage actively in creating a more prosperous and sustainable society. The talk addresses the role of our personal experiences with environmental issues and how they shape our attitudes and behavior. The talk concludes with a discussion of the role of the built environment in education for sustainability and the ways in which universities can use sustainability to promote long-term stewardship of its resources.
