Title:
Tracking Your Research Journey: From Citations to Open Access and Data Management
Abstract:
This workshop brings together experts from Purdue Libraries who will present information and resources to graduate engineering education students pertaining to scholarly impact, scholarly publishing, and research data management. The goal of the presentation is to arm attendees with the knowledge they will need to be productive in the changing landscape of scholarly publishing as it pertains to their influence in the research environment, the impact of their scholarship, and their research data footprint.
Scholarly Impact: Attendees will learn about various metrics and tools used to measure the impact of their research. This includes information on citation databases, altmetricts, persistent identifiers such as ORCiD, and other indicators that reflect the reach and influence of their work. Understanding these concepts will help students strategically enhance their scholarly presence and make informed decisions about where to publish and how to disseminate their research.
Scholarly Publishing: The workshop will cover the essentials of scholarly publishing, with special emphasis placed on open access publishing opportunities, which can increase the visibility and accessibility of research. Attendees will gain insights into the benefits and challenges of open access, as well as practical tips for taking advantage of Purdue’s open access publishing agreements.
Research Data Management: Effective data management is crucial for ensuring the integrity and reproducibility of research. This segment will provide an overview of best practices for data management and tools available at Purdue for data support. Attendees will learn how to manage their research data throughout the research lifecycle, from collection to publication and beyond. By the end of the workshop, attendees will be equipped with practical skills and knowledge to enhance their research impact, navigate the complexities of scholarly publishing, and manage their research data effectively. This comprehensive approach will empower graduate students to thrive in their academic and professional careers.
Bios:
Kevin Wiggins is originally from Des Moines, IA. His work as the Research Impact Librarian is grounded in citation tracking, management, and services for Purdue Libraries. He graduated with his MLIS from the University of Illinois in 2023 and has been with Purdue for one year. He is excited to bring his experience to the classroom and workshops across campus.
Kelly Burns received her MSLS from the University of Kentucky in 2023. With most of her libraries' background in outreach and instruction, she began her Purdue Libraries journey in 2024 as a Research Data Management Specialist, working to inform students and faculty of best practices in RDM and resources available on and off campus, specifically through the Purdue University Research Repository (PURR). Kelly’s current research focuses on the analysis of data management plans in awarded federal grants produced by Purdue researchers and the integration of serious play in research data management instruction, funded by Purdue Libraries’ REALs.
Nina Collins is the Scholarly Publishing Librarian for Purdue Libraries and School of Information Studies. She is a passionate advocate for Open Access, championing partnerships that enable Purdue authors to publish their work openly and affordably. Collins oversees Purdue e-Pubs, the institution's repository, while also delving into ethical publishing practices, open access's scholarly impact, and journal publishing best practices. Her most recent collaboration with the Library Publishing Coalition resulted in the publication of "An Ethical Framework for Library Publishing," cementing her commitment to advancing scholarly communication. Collins holds dual master's degrees in Library Science and Information Science from Indiana University, with a specialization in Digital Libraries.
