Dr. Menekse Awarded Prestigious Research Grant by the Institute of Education Sciences

Dr. Muhsin Menekse, along with Drs. Ala Samarapungavan and Diane Litman, has been awarded a prestigious research grant of $1.4 million by the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) through the U.S. Department of Education to enhance undergraduate STEM education by integrating mobile learning technologies with Natural Language Processing (NLP). Dr. Menekse received one of only 8 new research grants awarded for 2018 by the Institute of Education Sciences’ Postsecondary and Adult Education Program.

With this grant, Dr. Menekse and his research team will further develop and test the mobile technologies, web tools, instructor interfaces, and NLP algorithms. The final product will also include a professional development module to help instructors effectively use CourseMIRROR mobile learning system. The design process includes multiple quasi-experimental studies to refine elements of the reflection process (e.g., improving the prompts and feedback students get while writing their reflections) as well as qualitative work such as classroom observations and interviews and focus groups with instructors and students across multiple higher education institutions.
