Archives and Special Collections and Purdue University Press, units within Purdue University Libraries and School of Information Studies, invite you to a reading and recognition event celebrating William F. Causey’s latest book, John Houbolt: The Unsung Hero of the Apollo Moon Landings, published by Purdue University Press; and the author’s generous gift, the William F. Causey Space Exploration Collection, to Purdue University Archives and Special Collections. This collection includes rare signed first editions; items that have flown in space; and mission manuals, reports, and publications—many of which are signed by U.S. astronauts. Join Libraries to celebrate Purdue’s proud commitment to preserve and make accessible special collections materials that help to tell the story of space exploration, right here in the “Cradle of Astronauts.”

•  Remarks at 4:30 PM.

•  Presentation and book signing by William F. Causey.

•  Copies of John Houbolt: The Unsung Hero of the Apollo Moon Landings by William F. Causey will be available for purchase and signing at the event.

About William F. Causey:

Bill Causey has followed the space program since 1961, when he watched astronaut Alan Shepard become the first American in space from inside his elementary school gymnasium. His book, John Houbolt: The Unsung Hero of the Apollo Lunar Landings, published by Purdue University Press in March 2020, tells the story about the man who convinced NASA how to land astronauts on the moon and return them safely to earth. The book has received rave reviews, and Bill has led virtual discussions about his book with hundreds of people around the country, including a group of 350 NASA engineers working on the Artemis program for returning humans to the moon.

Bill also has made two donations of unique and rare space books, photographs, and artifacts to the Purdue University Libraries. Trained as a lawyer, Bill had worked on Capitol Hill, for the U.S. Department of Justice, the American Red Cross, and in private law practice. He retired in 2019 from the Office of the Attorney General for the District of Columbia. Bill also has served for the past 18 years as a docent at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.
