AAE 590 HS: Human Spaceflight Fall 2026

Ready to dive into the world of real human spaceflight—where engineering decisions shape what crews can do, how safely they can do it, and how systems evolve over time? This course gives you a front‑row seat to the tools, methods, and processes used to design, analyze, control, and continuously improve complex human spaceflight systems, with an emphasis on qualitative, systems‑level thinking rather than heavy computation. You’ll learn through engaging projects, curated readings, short writing assignments, and lively discussion spaces (with the flexibility to work ahead on everything except the scheduled discussions). Even better: the course is led by Beth Moses, a professional suborbital astronaut and longtime human spaceflight practitioner who has served as Virgin Galactic’s Chief Astronaut Instructor and previously worked at NASA’s Johnson Space Center—bringing hard‑won, “been there” perspective on how human spaceflight systems are actually built, tested, and matured.
