It is the pleasure of the Professional Development Chairs to invite
you to a Professional Development Seminar tomorrow, from 11:30 – 12:30, in Lilly 3118. The speaker will be ABE’s own Dr. Porterfield,
who will speak on Science Policy, framed by his own experience as a
scientist with NASA. It’s bound to be a fun-filled, information packed seminar, and we can’t wait to see all of you there! A free lunch will be provided.
Several prospective students will be visiting Purdue to learn more about our program and to see if it is the right fit for them. For the past six years, ABE has offered the option of staying with a current grad student from our department to these visiting students, and it has been very successful.
This year, we need your help again! And we need it NOW!!!
If you are able to volunteer to host a prospective student on the nights of February 7 and 8, please follow the link below to fill out the survey. Please sign up by February 1st so that we have time to pair you with a student.

Please direct any questions to Jonathan or Gabe (joverto@purdue.edu orgwilfong@purdue.edu).
Thank you for your willingness to contribute to ABE!
Please see below for professional development opportunities for grad students:
(1) there is a great new workshop this semester called “Career Fair 101” for graduate students who may not have attended career fairs in the past and are not sure if or how to to attend one,
(2) students that register for the fair on the CCO website will be invited to the professional networking event the evening before the fair!
Are you interested in participating in our sixth annual Graduate Industrial Research Symposium?
Then come to our callout on December 11, 12:00PM-1PM in LILY G401. There will be free food!
Our next Symposium will be March 25, 2019. Develop your leadership and management skills by volunteering to chair one of our Symposium committees! We are looking for grad students interested in being marketing, 3MT, session, and poster chairs.
This year, our departmental Symposium will partner with Purdue’s 150 Years of Giant Leaps and other departments on campus so this will be an excellent opportunity to meet new people. The theme will be Sustainability.
Time commitment: 1-2 hours per week. Typically, we will have biweekly-weekly meetings during the Spring semester.
The mission and goals of our Symposium can be found here.
On November 28th at 8:30-9:45am, PGSG will be hosting the Next Generation Scholars Program where they will bring high school students and have them listen to graduate and undergraduates present their posters. If students sign up, they will not only get free breakfast and a t-shirt, but also have their poster printed for free.
If someone has a poster and would like to get more practice, they are more than welcome to sign up as well. I know it’s a bit early in the day, but K-12 outreach is a great service component that could be added to a CV, and is a good opportunity to practice public speaking. If y’all could get the word out about this, that would be great. Sign up link is: bit.ly/2Phkret .
