Food Drive!

Calling all graduate students!

This will be the final GSA philanthropy event of the year, and it’s gonna be a good one!

This weekend when you go get groceries, just pick up an extra can or two of food and bring it in on Monday! Or consider donating a few dollars!

What: FOOD DRIVE COMPETITION among other student organizations in the College of Ag

When: April 1-12th: starting Monday

Where: Donation boxes will be in LILLY grad student offices and POTR 236 (talk to me if your lab would like a box in an additional locations); money donations can be done online (debit/credit card); cash/check donations will also be accepted (See below)

Who: YOU! And all your friends!

Why: Because we love giving back to the community! Also if we win we get a cool trophy and receive community recognition :)

Food Finders accepts just about anything that is shelf stable but they especially like:

  • 100% Fruit Juices
  • Baking items
  • Beans
  • Boxed rice and potatoes
  • Canned fish and meats
  • Canned fruits
  • Canned vegetables
  • Cereal
  • Drink Mixes
  • Laundry products
  • Macaroni & cheese
  • Meals in a can/box
  • Paper products
  • Pasta and meat sauces
  • Peanut Butter
  • Personal care products
  • Soups and stews

Monetary donations

Cash or check (made out to Food Finders Food Bank), email me at

Food Finders can make just $1 turn into three meals! Also, for every $1 donated, we will get three pounds of food credited to our donation tally. If you want a receipt for tax purposes, email me and I will prepare a form for you to fill out.

Credit card donations

$10 minimum donation

ABE GSA Philanthropy Chair 2018-2019

Professional Development Seminar Feb. 5 2019

It is the pleasure of the Professional Development Chairs to invite
you to a Professional Development Seminar tomorrow, from 11:30 –  12:30, in Lilly 3118. The speaker will be ABE’s own Dr. Porterfield,
who will speak on Science Policy, framed by his own experience as a
scientist with NASA. It’s bound to be a fun-filled, information packed  seminar, and we can’t wait to see all of you there! A free lunch will  be provided.

Superbowl Party!

This Sunday (Feb 3rd) we will be gathering together to watch the Super Bowl at “The Palace” (122 N 3rd Street, Lafayette) which is a large apartment on the top floor directly above Chumley’s. Kick-off for the game is at 6:30 pm, so you can arrive as early as 6 pm and watch the game. ABE GSA will provide snacks (chips, popcorn, etc.), drinks (soda, water) and potentially some pizzas.

2019 ABE Recruitment Weekend-Hosts Needed!

Several prospective students will be visiting Purdue to learn more about our program and to see if it is the right fit for them. For the past six years, ABE has offered the option of staying with a current grad student from our department to these visiting students, and it has been very successful.

This year, we need your help again!  And we need it NOW!!!

If you are able to volunteer to host a prospective student on the nights of February 7 and 8, please follow the link below to fill out the survey.  Please sign up by February 1st so that we have time to pair you with a student.

2019 ABE Recruitment Weekend Poster Session!

On Thursday, February 7th ABE will host prospective students. As part of the events, we will hold a short Research Showcase Poster Session where the prospective students, current students, and faculty will be able to interact with and learn about some of the research efforts in our department. We are looking for about 30 current graduate students to present posters.  Ideally, we want posters that have already been printed as this event is not intended to add more work.  We would like to save that effort and present at the GSA symposium in March.  If you have a poster that is yearning to be shared again, we need you!  You will have the opportunity to make an impact on the prospective students’ impressions of the department and hopefully help them choose Purdue ABE!
The Research Showcase Poster Session will be held on February 7th from 5:30 – 6:30 PM in the PMU South Ballroom.  Dinner will be served immediately after and we encourage you to stay for dinner.

Spring 2019 Philanthropy Opportunities

January: We’ll be going back to Hanna community center to help kids with homework again! We did this last semester and everyone that went really enjoyed it. It will be Monday January 28th at 3-4 pm at the community center in Lafayette. Same as last time, there will be no official carpool but if you need a ride let me know and we’ll see what we can do.
+Bonus January event: You probably already got an email asking for donations for the Lafayette homeless center. The drop-off is conveniently located in Pfendler, see fliers for more details.
February: We will be helping out at Imagination Station for their “Love is Sweet” lab on Saturday February 16th  to bring the joy of chemistry to children of all ages. Simple chemistry kits will be provided, so you really just need to show up! Times are flexible: you can volunteer for any combination of one-hour slots from 9:30-3 pm (one hour plus arriving about 20 minutes early to get familiar with the set up). We will need the most help from about 11-1 pm, but helping with any of the time slots would be great! If you are interested or have questions, please Jenny me! Let Jenny know the end of the day next Wednesday, February 13th.
March: No philanthropy event this month. If you’re just dying to help people out, consider offering your services to the Symposium Chairs! I’m sure they would appreciate extra hands.
April: TBD: If anyone is interested in doing a science demo for the kids at the Hanna center, let me know and we may be able to schedule it for April. Otherwise we may do more homework, could help with a spring clean up, or might go to a soup kitchen. If you like any of those ideas or have more let me know.
