Senior Scientist Dr. Chandra Nath and two Ph.D. students, Thomas Maani and Yong Han Kim participated in and presented their research at the co-located conferences, the ASME International Manufacturing Science and Engineering Conference (MSEC 2024) and the SME North American Manufacturing Research Conference (NAMRC 52), hosted by the University of Tennessee Knoxville from June 17-21, 2024. They showcased their findings related to sustainable & smart manufacturing, which includes circular economy, rare earth magnet recovery, and AI-based anomaly detection for manufacturing.

  1. Maani, T., Deng, S., Li, L., Sutherland, J.W., “Disassembly Analysis to Promote Rare Earth Permanent Magnet Recovery from End-of-Life Electric Vehicle Motors,” Proc. of the ASME International Manufacturing Science and Engineering Conference (MSEC) 2024. (Presented by Thomas Maani)
  2. Kim, Y. H., Deng, S., Maani, T., Mathur, N., Triebe, M.J., Sutherland, J.W., “Developing manufacturing-relevant indicators for assessing long-run circularity of a product’s life cycle,” Proc. of the 52nd SME North American Manufacturing Research Conference (NAMRC), 2024. (Presented by Yong Han Kim)
  3. Joung, B.G., Nath, C., Sutherland J.W., “Edge Device AI with LSTM-RNN Based Anomaly Detection for Manufacturing,” ASME International Manufacturing Science and Engineering Conference (MSEC 2024). Poster Paper (Presented by Chandra Nath)

Dr. Chandra Nath presented a poster on smart manufacturing at the conference for Byung Gun Joung and judged the Students Manufacturing Design Competition organized by MSEC. Additionally, Dr. Nath chaired a symposium topic and served as session chair/co-chair for two sessions at MSEC. His contributions extend to reviewing numerous papers for the society and actively participating in ASME and SME committee meetings. Dr. Nath also engaged in collaborative project meetings with esteemed partners from the University of Tennessee Knoxville and Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
