LSM Update for the 2019-2020 Academic Year

Author: Nehika

It has been a very active year for the Laboratory for Sustainable Manufacturing, and we are pleased to report on our accomplishments for the 2019-20 AY. Yue Wang, Wo Jae Lee, Matthew Triebe, and Nehika Mathur each successfully defended their PhD proposals – congratulations to our new PhD candidates! We were honored to host several visiting scholars: Geng Wang, Jan-Peter Seevers, and Zhen Qin. On the research front, in 2019 the LSM group published 24 papers in several high impact journals, e.g., Resources, Conservation and Recycling, Journal of Cleaner Production, and Journal of Intelligent Manufacturing, in the areas of smart/sustainable manufacturing and circular economy (we are off to a good start for 2020 with 11 papers published).

Excellent research work continues through grants from the Critical Materials Institute (CMI), Wabash Heartland Innovation Network (WHIN), an NSF/NSFC partnership with several Chinese universities on energy efficient machine tools, and several companies. In addition, we received new grants from NSF (PEER), DOE, several TAP projects, the Indiana Recycling Coalition, and several companies. We also continue to develop educational resources for sustainable manufacturing through generous contribution from a corporate foundation. As always, we will continue to strive to promote greener industrial solutions to help society work towards sustainability.
