LeafSpec

LeafSpec LLC is the ONLY company Dr. Jin works with for the commercialization of Purdue's handheld leaf imaging technologies.

What is LeafSpec?

LeafSpec is an accurate, affordable and portable hyperspectral crop leaf imager innovated in the ABE Plant Sensor Lab at the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering of Purdue University. It is the first of its kind in the world which can be easily deployed at any location and generates hyperspectral leaf images with 0.5mm resolution.

Our Vision

Hyperspectral imaging technology has been widely applied in industry and academia for plant science research. However, current Hyperspectral imaging systems are big and expensive, making it difficult to benefit more people with the technology. In order to provide affortable and convenient devices that allows researches and farmers to better understand their field and plants, we propse our solution - LeafSpec. In this project we focus on plant features prediction models’ development and implementation on the device. Besides, we are developing robotic leaf scanning systems to go with this sensor device, which will fully automate the sensor’s data collection with comparatively high throughput in both greenhouse and field.

Our Achievements

The Purdue agricultural engineers successfully implemented both hardware and software technologies from the existing advanced hyperspectral imaging stations and packed everything into our compact handheld device - LeafSpec. It takes only 10 seconds for LeafSpec to scan a leaf non-destructively and provide the measurement results of the plant’s physiological features. The hyperspectral image is immediately processed with an onboard microprocessor, and the measured plant features can be viewed in real-time with a smartphone app.

Our Products

LeafSpec-Wheat

The wheat version is designed to scan plants with thin

leaves, such as rice and wheat.

LeafSpec-Corn

The corn version is designed to scan plants with long

leaves, such as corn and sorghum.

LeafSpec-Multi

The dicot multispectral version is designed to collect data

with even higher resolution (0.04mm/pixel) on specified

wavelengths.

LeafSpec-Dicot

The dicot version is designed to collect hyperspectral data

from dicot plants such as soybean, potato and tomato.
