Principal Investigator

Jason Morphew
Assistant Professor Of Engineering Edu
Dr. Jason Morphew is currently an assistant professor at Purdue University in Engineering Education and serves as the director of undergraduate curriculum and advanced learning technologies for SCALE. Dr. Morphew is affiliated with the INSPIRE research institute for Pre-College Engineering and the Center for Advancing the Teaching and Learning of STEM (CATALYST). Dr. Morphew's research focuses on the application of principles of learning derived from cognitive science and the learning sciences to the design and evaluation of learning environments and technologies that enhance learning, interest, and engagement in STEM. Dr. Morphew's expertise in self-regulated learning has resulted in several publications in top-tier journals such as the Journal of Educational Psychology, Metacognition and Learning, Applied Cognitive Psychology, and Physical Review: Physics Education Research. Professor Morphew has been recognized for his teaching in the First Year Engineering program and is a currently serving as a course curator for Transforming Ideas Into Innovation I. Dr. Morphew has also recently taught courses focused on integrated STEM, quantitative methods, and assessment. Dr. Morphew earned his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in Educational Psychology from the Cognitive Science of Teaching and Learning Division. His dissertation examined self-regulated learning of engineering students enrolled in introductory physics courses. While at Illinois, he collaborated on research with colleagues in engineering education, mechanical engineering, computer science, physics education, human and computer interactions, as well as educational psychology, the learning sciences, and curriculum and instruction. Prior to pursing his doctorate, Professor Morphew earned his master's degree in Educational Psychology from Wichita State University where he also served as an instructor at Wichita Area Technical College in the math and chemistry departments. Dr. Morphew has also taught math and science in middle school and high school where he combined scientific inquiry and engineering design to teach math and science.

Junior Bennett
Graduate Research Assistant
Junior A. Bennett is a Graduate Research Assistant and 2023 Lynn Fellowship Awardee pursuing a Ph.D. in Ecological Sciences and Engineering, partnering with associate department of Engineering Education at the Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana USA. He is excited about the opportunity to work with Associate Professor Dr. Jason Morphew in the i2Engineering Research Laboratory at Purdue. Junior describes this incredible journey from “Market Vendor” in Jamaica to Fellow at Purdue University as challenging, transformative, and rewarding. He credits Holmwood Technical High School in Jamaica where he had served as Head Boy for playing a significant role in providing a sound foundation in STEM education with a holistic focus. His success (S) formula is the summation of faith (F), commitment (C), effort (E1) and effectiveness (E2). He was awarded by the Ministry of Education Youth and Culture in Jamaica, the Technical High School scholarship in 2003 to pursue undergraduate studies at the University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech Ja). He graduated from UTech Ja with a Bachelor of Education in TVET Industrial Technology – Electrical at the top of his class. He was the recipient of a Graduate Assistantship from Western Illinois University and completed a Master of Science in Manufacturing Engineering Systems and was awarded for outstanding academic performance. He returned to serve his alma mater (UTech Ja) for 12 years full-time as as lecturer in mathematics, physics, and engineering respectively before transitioning to becoming Programme Coordinator at the Vocational Training Development Institute/HEART Trust NSTA and later Manager at the Bureau of Standards Jamaica. Junior is a Certified Manufacturing Engineer by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers and Productivity Ambassador by the Jamaica Productivity Centre in the Ministry of Labour and Social Security. He is a corporate member of the Jamaica Institution of Engineers (JIE) and was appointed to represents JIE on the National Commission of Science and Technology for two consecutive years. One of the most rewarding experiences for Junior is to engage in mixed method research studies with the Productivity Research Group at UTech Ja where he was co-founder and leader. He is an active member of the community and had served various profit and non-profit organizations in Jamaica as board member. In 2019, he was awarded UTech Ja President Award for Outstanding Service in the Category of Community Service. His most fulfilling experiences are spending quality time with his family, sharing his experience, serving others and empowering humanity.
Ben is a lecturer in ECE and a Ph.D. student in Engineering Education. He is studying the impact of reverse engineering curriculum on student learning and interest in Electrical and Computer Engineering.
Amirreza Mehrabi
Graduate Research Assistant
Amirezza is a Ph.D. student in Engineering Education at Purdue University. His research interests revolve around leveraging technology to enhance student learning experiences. He has significant experience in educational data mining and machine learning and is enthusiastic about designing computer-adapted testing to track students' abilities and skills, along with using Item Response Theory (IRT) models to analyze educational data. His research also extends to exploring technology-enhanced learning and its potential in improving student outcomes. Given his experience in operations research and optimization, his research examines the development and application of statistical algorithms to design educational systems that are both effective and efficient. Amirezza's goal is to use his expertise to contribute towards making a positive impact on education.
Artre Turner
Graduate Research Assistant
Artre is a Ph.D. student in Engineering Education. He is studying the impact of microelectronics curriculum on student learning, interest, motivation, and transformative experiences.

Undergraduate Students

Zhengyi Jiang
ENE - Undergraduate Researcher
Zhengyi Jiang is an undergraduate researcher, majoring in both Statistics, Math Emphasis, and Applied Statistics at the College of Science. His research field mainly focuses on Data Analytics, Statistical Inferences, Cognitive Science, and Applied Math. He is also a member of Purdue Data Mine. Zhengyi’s research goal is to apply Mathematical Modelling and Statistical Inference Analysis (SI) to help young students learn STEM knowledge more wisely and efficiently.
Camille Johnson
ENE - Undergraduate Researcher
Camille Johnson is a Junior in Electrical Engineering Technology with an interest in minoring in Korean. Her research mainly focuses on microelectronics through the SCALE (SCalable Asymmetric Lifestyle Engagement) initiative. Volunteerism and the encouragement of cross-cultural connections within an academic setting is a passion of hers as she is currently the President of Global Engineering Ambassadors and a Member of the Board of Directors of Connect Me Online Tutoring. A goal of hers as she is getting closer to graduation is to inspire the youth to pursue a career within the microelectronics industry and engineering as a whole.
Manas Kathuria
ENE - Undergraduate Researcher
Manas Kathuria is a First Year Engineering Student, intending on majoring in Mechanical Engineering. He has undertaken research in various STEM fields, including Biomedical sciences and Chemistry; over the course of the next four years he intends on gaining further research in the Aero, Mech and Data engineering sectors.
Aashvi Majmundar
ENE - Undergraduate Researcher
Aashvi Majmundar is a First Year Engineering Student, planning to major in computer engineering. She has researched in various fields related to STEM and worked on computer languages and designing. She has also worked in fields related to AI like computer vision. She intends to reaearch on various projects in the next four years.
Nadine Vargas
