Presentation Title: Examining the Effect of Gender on STEM Enrollment Using an Expectancy Value Lens

Abstract: There is a need for qualified STEM graduates, particularly those from diverse backgrounds. However, of those that enroll, only about half earn a STEM degree. This research study examines STEM enrollment through an Expectancy Value Theory (EVT) lens that involves expectations for success, achievement related choices, and subjective task values. Using the High School Longitudinal Study data set stepwise logistic regression was conducted to examine how math beliefs impact STEM enrollment, and to examine how gender interacts with EVT. The findings indicate that EVT impacts enrollment in STEM, and the impact differs by gender. The results of the logistic modeling raise interesting questions about student experiences that need to be explored in future research.
