EEE staff member Tammi Thayer receives Bravo Award

The College of Engineering announced the University's Bravo Award winners. The award recognizes outstanding contributions in four categories: moving the University forward, operational excellence, innovation/creativity, and fiscal stewardship. The recipient of the Bravo Award for 2016 is Tammi Thayer, Associate Director of Advising in EEE. Thayer was recognized for her work in assessing students' experiential learning beyond the classroom, and their interactions with faculty.

Dr. Jafvert, Dr. Howarter lead Purdue - UniCartagena collaboration bringing water filters to rural Colombia

In July, Dr. Chad Jafvert, professor in Purdue's Environmental and Ecological Engineering and Civil Engineering, traveled to Cartagena with a group of three students in a Global Design Team supported by the Office of Global Engineering Programs. Their goal was to provide the community of San Jose del Playon, in Bolivar, with access to clean water. Prof. Jafvert, along with Dr. John Howarter, assistant professor in Environmental and Ecological Engineering and Materials Engineering at Purdue, have been working on a reliable and inexpensive slow sand (or bio-sand) filter system to improve water quality since 2011. Purdue EEE student Sanyukta Gokhale was also part of the team.

Dr. Nateghi analyzes effects of seawalls, coastal forests in reducing tsunami damage in Japan

Dr. Roshanak Nateghi, assistant professor in Purdue's Environmental and Ecological Engineering and Industrial Engineering, was part of a research team that analyzed a history of tsunamis along the Pacific coast of Japan's Tohoku region. These researchers have learned that seawalls higher than 5 meters reduce damage and death, while coastal forests also play an important role in protecting the public.

Dr. Blatchley's research on by-products of chemical pool treatments featured

Dr. Ernest (Chip) Blatchley, Purdue Professor of Civil Engineering and Environmental and Ecological Engineering, was featured in a recent Chemical & Engineering News article examining the by-products of chemical pool treatments. The article, "What Lies Beneath," highlights the interaction of dirt, sweat, urine, and personal care products with chemicals used to disinfect pool water, and looks at potential health effects.

2016 SURF presentations highlight Purdue EEE undergraduate summer research

Three Purdue University Environmental and Ecological Engineering students participated in the 2016 Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) symposium on August 4 in the Neil Armstrong Hall of Engineering. As the capstone project of their summer research experience, undergraduates Celeste Bronson, Emily Conkling, and Jason Hawes presented their findings during the event which was open to the public.

Wen-Che Hou, PhD alumni receives EPA award for co-authored paper

EEE Alum Wen-Che Hou, along with three co-authors, was awarded a 2015 Scientific and Technological Achievement Award (Honorable Mention) from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for authorship of a paper entitled: "Photoreactivity of Unfunctionalized Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes Involving Hydroxyl Radical: Chiral dependency and Surface Coating Effect," published in the journal Environmental Science and Technology.

Purdue graduate named Gates Cambridge Scholar

Purdue University graduate Marisa Henry has been named a Gates Cambridge Scholar. Henry, a Canadian citizen now living in Austin, Texas, is one of 55 recipients of the scholarship from a worldwide pool of 3,730 applicants outside the U.S. and the United Kingdom.
