Principal Investigator

Gozdem Kilaz

Gozdem Kilaz is Assistant Professor in School of Engineering Technology and Aviation and Transportation Technology (by courtesy) at Purdue University at West Lafayette, Indiana. She holds B.S., M.S., and Ph.D degrees in Chemical Engineering. Currently, she serves as the Chief Scientist for the Air Transportation Institute for Environmental Sustainability (AirTIES). Her research is focused on bio-derived transportation liquid fuels and sustainability. She is also a faculty member of the Laboratory of Renewable Resources Engineering (LORRE). Her current projects include synthesis, certification, and fire safety of biofuels.

Postdocs

Petr Vozka
Postgraduate Research Assistant
Petr Vozka obtained his Ph.D. in the School of Engineering Technology under the guidance of Dr. Kilaz. He holds B.S. degree in Chemistry and M.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from University of Chemistry and Technology, Prague. His research interests include fuel chemistry, properties, and certification protocol. He is currently working on the chemical composition-property correlations in alternative aviation fuels.

Graduate Students

Joseph Cacciatore
Pmri Fellowship
Joseph Cacciatore is a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps and a MS candidate in Engineering Technology studying under Dr. Kilaz and Dr. Eric Dietz as a member of the Purdue Military Research Institute. He earned his B.S. in Systems Engineering from the United States Naval Academy in 2018. His research interests are using two-dimensional gas chromatography to aide in assuring electronics authenticity for applications in the Department of Defense.
Louis Edwards Caceres Martinez
Graduate Teaching Assistant
Louis Caceres obtained both his M.S. and B.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Universidad Nacional de Colombia. His research interests include fuel characterization, fluidization, and thermal modeling. He is currently working on high-performance renewable blendstock fuels under the supervision of Prof. Gozdem Kilaz.
Kai Jin
Graduate Research Assistant
Kai Jin obtained his M.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from Purdue University. He earned his B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from Rutgers University and Beijing University of Chemical Technology. He is currently working on developing solutions for existing plastic waste under the supervision of Prof. Gozdem Kilaz and Prof. N.-H. Linda Wang.
Brent Modereger
Graduate Research Assistant
Brent Modereger earned his B.S. degree in Chemistry/Biochemistry from San Jose State University before coming to Purdue, where he is currently a Ph.D. student in the Analytical Chemistry Division of the Department of Chemistry. He is a joint member of both Prof. Gozdem Kilaz's and Prof. Hilkka Kenttamaa's groups, specializing in mass spectrometry and chromatography to research efforts in aviation fuels.
Jorge Ramirez Velasco
Post Doc Research Associate
Jorge Ramirez is a Ph.D. student in the Materials Science and Engineering. He holds B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Tecnologico de Monterrey, Mexico and six-sigma green belt from Arizona State University. His current research focuses on thermal barrier coatings for gas turbines and its interaction with biofuel impurities. His interests include aviation fuels, and aircraft technology.

Anthony Park is a cadet in US Army National Guard and undergraduate student pursuing a bachelor's degree in Biological Engineering. His research interests include biofuels, biophysics, and data science.

Reyvant Tambi
Undergraduate student
Reyvant Tambi is an undergraduate student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University. Currently, he is conducting an independent thesis study, supervised by Dr. Gozdem Kilaz and Petr Vozka, that involves investigating chemical compositions and testing of different combinations of aviation fuels that meet ASTM standards and methodology. His other research interests are mechanics and designing of machine systems.
Wan Tang Jeff Zhang
Jeff is an undergraduate student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry. He is currently conducting research with Prof. Hilkka Kenttamaa research group and works closely with Prof. Gozdem Kilaz group members. His current research involves investigating chemical composition of aviation fuel and lubricant base oil using mass spectrometer.
