What should I know about the University of Queensland in terms of their academic ranking?
UQ was independently ranked as one of Australia’s best universities in the 2008 edition of the Good Universities Guide and is a member of the Group of Eight , a coalition of Australia's leading universities.
Does the UQ offer the same level of extracurricular activities as Purdue does? If so, what should I know?
Visit this site to learn more about student life at the UQ: http://www.uq.edu.au/studyabroad/experience-life-at-uq
Are the semesters the same at the UQ and Australia as those at Purdue and the U.S.?
No, they are not. The spring semester at the U.Q. (called semester 1) begins in February, not in January like at Purdue. It is suggested that you arrive in Australia in mid-February to attend required study abroad orientation sessions, and to begin to move in. Classes begin approximately the 1st of March, and run through the end of June.
If I participate in the UQ study abroad, can I still get a summer internship?
Due to the difference of semester starts between Purdue and the UQ, it would be very difficult to secure a summer internship following your study abroad. However, due to the delay in the semester start (February vs. January), there is the possibility that a student could extend any work arrangement they may have over the winter break, to run until the first of February, should they desire.
How much is the tuition at the UQ?
Because Purdue is an Exchange Partner with the UQ, you will pay regular tuition fees to Purdue based on studying abroad, including required associated fees. In-state students pay in-state tuition and non-residents pay out-of-state tuition. See the link below for additional details
How does studying abroad impact/change my financial aid or scholarships?
Each student is responsible for investigating and resolving this question individually. You can begin this process by visiting Purdue’s Financial Aid Study Abroad site: https://www.studyabroad.purdue.edu/FinancialAid/
I think I might be interested, but would like to talk to students that have had a study abroad at the UQ. Can you help?
Yes! Follow this link to students who have studied abroad at the UQ; note that most will not be from your program: www.studyabroad.purdue.edu/Return/SearchResults.cfm
How would I begin the process if I am interested in participating?
You should FIRST work directly with your academic advisor to confirm that your program progression is aligned with the 6th semester here at Purdue, and that you meet other specified requirements of the UQ to be considered (http://www.uq.edu.au/studyabroad/admission-requirements ).
Once confirmed:
You will be required to complete and submit to the UQ an SA Incoming Exchange Program Application (https://www.studyabroad.purdue.edu/apply_online/studyabroadapplication.cfm?ProgramID=840 ). This online application is only one part of your total application to study abroad. A completed application includes the online application, an essay describing your motivation for studying abroad, two recommendations, and an official transcript. Students applying for Exchange programs will fill out another application for the program University following their acceptance as a Purdue Study Abroad Student.
Applications must be received by UQ by no later than September 30
of the previous calendar year when applying for Semester 1 admission.
Please apply early at the Purdue Study Abroad website as programs fill up early. Plan well in advance, to avoid missing out on this unique academic opportunity. There is no leeway in the deadline with the UQ program!
