As graduation looms, Rashmika Manipati, a senior in Environmental and Ecological Engineering at Purdue University, is gearing up to tackle some of the world's most pressing environmental challenges. With a blend of practical solutions and persuasive advocacy, Rashmika is determined to make a significant impact.
“My primary goal is to help people recognize the importance of preserving our environment and actively contribute to its protection,” Rashmika shares.
Rashmika’s journey into sustainability began in her childhood, influenced by her mother and other women in her local community who were deeply committed to environmental stewardship. “My mother has always shown an incredible passion and enthusiasm for the environment, and her mindset and values have certainly rubbed off on me,” Rashmika reflects.
At Purdue, Rashmika has honed her ability to transform passion into action. Engineering has equipped her with a structured approach to problem-solving, essential for addressing complex environmental issues. “Purdue Engineering has equipped me with a set of valuable skills that have thoroughly prepared me for the 'real world.' The rigorous academic environment and hands-on experiences have fostered not only technical expertise but also essential soft skills,” she explains.
Beyond academics, Rashmika has found a supportive community at Purdue. “It’s truly endearing to see and interact with like-minded individuals who share similar passions. This extends from my peers in classes to my professors. Everyone is always open to help, collaborate, and simply engage in meaningful conversation,” she adds.
These experiences have shaped Rashmika into a formidable advocate for sustainability. “I aspire to use my engineering expertise to create practical, tangible, and actionable solutions for the various environmental challenges we face today. While developing solutions is a key aspect, another equally important part is persuading various stakeholders to take action using scientifically backed facts. Effective communication and advocacy are essential to ensuring that these solutions are implemented and drive meaningful change,” she asserts.
Rashmika also offers advice to future engineering students: “Don’t be intimidated or scared. Coming to Purdue, all the classes, labs, and everything else can feel overwhelming and tough to adjust to at first, but don’t let that discourage you! With time, you’ll get more accustomed to it, and it will get easier. Purdue Engineering is truly preparing you for what lies ahead. Also, as a woman in engineering, you’re part of a strong community of women pursuing the same path, and we’re all in this together. Make sure to appreciate and lean on that support. Being a part of both the EEE program and the Women in Engineering program has introduced me to a network of incredibly inspiring women. Take your time to find your people!”
Looking ahead, Rashmika plans to work in the industrial sustainability sphere, focusing on optimizing existing industrial processes to make them more environmentally friendly. She believes that by improving these processes, significant strides can be made towards a more sustainable future.
Rashmika Manipati’s journey is a testament to the power of passion, education, and community. Her dedication to environmental sustainability and her engineering expertise position her as a future leader in the field. As she steps into the next chapter of her life, Rashmika is poised to make a lasting impact on the world.
