EEE Recognition Night honors 2022 awardees

Purdue EEE students, faculty, staff, corporate partners, and members of the External Advisory Council (EAC) recently gathered for Recognition Night 2022, an annual ceremony celebrating excellence in teaching, advising, research, and academic achievement.

GRADUATE STUDENT AWARDS

Taymee Brandon, Ford Foundation Fellow
Purdue EEE graduate student Taymee Brandon was awarded a 2021 Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. 

Rachel Gehr, Outstanding Service Scholarship Award
The College of Engineering Outstanding Service Scholarship Award recognizes engineering graduate students who provide outstanding service to the graduate student community, the School, the College, and/or the University. Rachel is also an NSF Fellow

Matthew Gozun, Teaching Academy Graduate Teaching Award
Sponsored by the Teaching Academy and the Office of the Provost, the EEE Teaching Academy Graduate Teaching Award honors outstanding teaching contributions. Recipients are selected by each academic department for their commitment to undergraduate education. Matthew was also awarded the Detachable Contained Association (DCSA) Scholarship.

Kendrick Hardaway, Magoon Graduate Teaching Award
The College of Engineering Magoon Awards are given to outstanding teaching assistants and instructors in memory of Estus H. and Vashti L. Magoon. Kendrick is also a Latinx Trailblazers in Engineering Fellow.

Thomas Maani, Best Oral Presentation, BCA Scholarship, NSBE Region 4 Scholarship, National Society of Black Engineering (NSBE) 2022 Convention
Maani was awarded Best Oral Presentation and received the NSBE BCA Scholarship. This recognition awards $2500 to an academically outstanding graduate student who also contributes to NSBE’s mission. Additionally, Maani received a $400 NSBE Region 4 Scholarship for academic excellence.  

Li Song, Outstanding Graduate Student Research Award
The College of Engineering Outstanding Graduate Student Research Award goes to students who have demonstrated excellence and leadership in research through publications, participation in professional organizations, and willingness to mentor others. Li defended her dissertation successfully in Spring 2022. 

 

UNDERGRADUATE AWARDS

In 2020, EEE introduced the Wangari Maathai, Gaylord Nelson, and Rachel Carson awards. These awards recognize the excellence and potential future excellence of students who have demonstrated academic achievement and engaged leadership related to sustainability and the environment in harmony with the mission of EEE. 

Jennifer Ray, EAC Scholarship
Jennifer is a junior in EEE.  She served as SEEE secretary this year, participated as mentor in the Women in Engineering Mentees & Mentors program, and is highly engaged in Purdue Student Engineering Foundation where she leads tours of engineering facilities and enjoys the opportunity to impact future Purdue engineers.  She is excited to be an EHS Intern for Cargill in Gainesville, GA this summer.

Aaron Harp, Partners for Pollution Prevention Scholarship 
Aaron plans to graduate in May 2023 with his BSEEE and a minor in Electrical & Computer Engineering.  He began his studies at IUPUI, and then transferred to Purdue-West Lafayette in 2019 and quickly enrolled in the Cooperative Education program and had 3 terms with Kimberly Clark. EEE is actively involved in the Partners for Pollution Prevention, an organization comprised of Indiana industries, businesses, nonprofit organizations and governmental entities that are interested in pollution prevention.

EEE has three undergraduate students that are Purdue College of Engineering Ambassadors - Megan Bingenheimer, Hannah Congleton, and Griffin Laihinen 
 

2022 EEE OUTSTANDING SENIORS

Madison Hodges, Outstanding Senior
Madison is a Udall Scholar and a Mayoral-appointed West Lafayette Go Greener Commissioner who runs a food waste diversion program with Greek life. She has interned with the City of West Lafayette as a climate action intern and as an environmental intern with Cummins. She was also awarded a Udall Scholarship for her leadership, public service, and commitment to issues related to the environment. Next fall, Madison will be attending Bard College for an M.S. in Climate Science and Policy.

Ashley Sanchez-Gonzalez, Outstanding Senior
Ashley is president of SEEE, active in Phi Sigma Rho, and has been a part of the Purdue Run Club since her freshman year. She has conducted undergraduate research with Dr. Amish Shah and served as a peer T.A. for EEE 350 and EEE 355. Ashley interned with Weavers Consultant Group in Summer 2020, and Xylem Inc. in summer 2021. This summer she is interning at Black and Veatch with the Water Technology Group. She will be returning to Purdue in Fall 2022 to complete an M.S. degree as part of Purdue EEE’s combined-degree program.

2022 SEEE INSTRUCTIONAL EXCELLENCE AWARD

Professor Lindsey Payne2022 Instructional Excellence Award
The Society of Environmental and Ecological Engineers, or SEEE, Instructional Excellence Award recognizes an EEE faculty member for outstanding achievement in the area of teaching with an emphasis on the past academic year. Students in the EEE undergraduate degree program vote for an instructor based on the faculty member's commitment to student success, ability to effectively communicate material to students, and desire to motivate students to learn.
