Research Interests:
Dr. Panchal's research interests are in the scientific foundations of systems engineering, particularly systems that cannot be designed from technical standpoint alone but require an integrated view of social and technical aspects. He is particularly interested in the science of human decision-making, and how such decisions affect the structure and performance of decentralized socio-technical systems. Through collaborative multidisciplinary research, he has contributed to the understanding of (i) decisions made by participants in community-based product development and their role in bottom-up design, (ii) decisions made by entities in complex networked systems, such as the air-transportation network, and their effects on the structure and performance of networks, and (iii) decisions made by green energy generation companies, and their impact on the performance of energy systems.
Collaborations:
Dr. Panchal has been highly successful in developing a well-funded research program. He has initiated unique multidisciplinary research initiatives and led collaborative projects with faculty members in diverse domains across different universities. He has close collaborations with faculty members in Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Psychological Sciences, Aerospace Engineering, and Management. Currently, he has federally funded collaborative projects with Professors Karthik Ramani (ME), Mikhail Atallah (CS), Karthik Kannan (Management), and Daniel DeLaurentis (AAE) at Purdue University, and Anurag Srivastava (ECE) at Washington State University. He also has ongoing collaborations with Ilias Bilionis (ME), and Sebastien Helie (Psychological Sciences).
Distinctions:
Jitesh Panchal is a recipient of CAREER award (2009) from the National Science Foundation (NSF), Young Engineer Award (2010) and three best paper awards (2003, 2013, and 2016) from ASME, and a university silver medal (2000) from IIT Guwahati. He is a co-author of the book titled Integrated Design of Multiscale, Multifunctional Materials and Products. He is an Associate Editor of ASME Journal of Computing and Information Science in Engineering (JCISE) (2016-2018).
Jitesh has made significant contributions in service to his professional society, ASME. In the Design Engineering Division (DED), he has served as the Conference Chair (2014) and the Program Chair (2013) for the ASME International Conference on Design Education, which is a part of the ASME International Design Engineering Technical Conferences (I-DETC). He is the Chair of the Design Education technical committee of DED, and a member of the executive committee of ASME Computers and Information in Engineering (CIE) division. He was a keynote speaker at the Indian Institute of Metals (IIM)-TMS Symposium on Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) for Steel: Handshakes for Industrial Adoption. He was an invited member of US delegation for Indo-US Workshop on ICME for Integrated Realization of Engineered Materials and Products (Pune, India).
