John W. Sutherland, Distinguished Professor and Fehsenfeld Family Head of the School of Sustainability Engineering and Environmental Engineering, has been named a Fellow of the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors (AEESP). The honor recognizes members who have exhibited exceptional long-term excellence in environmental research, teaching, and/or service to the environmental engineering and science community.

Sutherland was honored for pioneering research and education advancements related to environmentally responsible design/manufacturing and life-cycle engineering. This includes innovations to reduce the environmental impact of manufacturing processes, production systems, and products, and seminal contributions to promote circular product life cycles. He developed and implemented trailblazing residential and distance learning courses on green design and manufacturing in the 1990s. At Purdue he led efforts to create one of the largest environmental engineering programs in the U.S. For AEESP he served on the Environmental Engineering Program Leaders (EEPL) Committee for more than a decade and as chair for five years. His research has appeared in 500+ journals and conference proceedings, and he has mentored over 150 graduate students and postdoctoral/visiting scholars.

Sutherland has received numerous recognitions/honors, including: Board Certified Environmental Engineering Member (BCEEM) from American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists (AAEES), NSF PECASE Award, Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) Gold Medal, American Society Mechanical Engineers (ASME) William T. Ennor Manufacturing Technology Award, AEESP/AAEES Frederick George Pohland Medal, Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Intl. John Connor Environmental Award, and election to the National Academy of Engineering.

Sutherland was acknowledged as part of the AEESP Class of 2026 Fellows during an online AEESP ceremony on Tuesday, June 23, 2026. He will again be recognized and receive a Fellow Medal during the 2027 AEESP Research and Education Conference at the University of Texas at Austin in May 2027.
